Australia is in the midst of a crazy flu season – so much so that over 40,000 cases of the flu were reported during June – compared to less 2,000 for the same period in 2018. It’s a flu that’s hard to avoid – even if, like me, you tell yourself “my strong immune system will protect me”. It didn’t. When a mild case of flu like symptoms struck myself and my husband during June we both turned immediately to natural remedies, like lemon and ginger tea and essential oils.
One of those natural remedies, eucalyptus oil, prompted me to deviate from my usual foodie news to share this post. Essential oils are all the rage. And for good reason. They’re often a safe, natural, and effective alternative to chemical laden products and medicines. Being a big fan of all things natural, I’m also getting into essential oils. My collection started with sandalwood (for the calming woody scent) and eucalyptus (to keep colds at bay). The eucalyptus came in handy when I woke up well and truly under the Winter weather….
Eucalyptus oil
Eucalyptus oil is extracted from the very same leaves that koalas enjoy. It’s an oil that really is essential, especially as the cold weather sets in. Why? Eucalyptus oil is great for avoiding colds and the flu thanks to its antibacterial and antiseptic properties. It’s also said to stimulate the immune system and combat lung inflammation.
As I recently learnt eucalyptus oil really can be your first port of call if you’re coming down with a cold or are congested. To clear your sinuses add a few drops to a bowl of very hot water and steam your face, breathing deeply, for a few minutes. After doing just this a couple of times a day, and without other medication, I managed to shake off the flu symptoms before they got the better of me.
